Welcome to Gratton & Oldridge

We are a mixed family farm (cereals and beef cattle) situated on the edges of Chawleigh and Lapford villages, in the heart of Mid Devon. Handsford Farm lies halfway between Exeter and Barnstaple, on the old road route, just off the A377, and midway between Dartmoor and Exmoor.

Gratton & Oldridge Preserves started in 1999 with our Blackberry and Pear Jelly made from Conference Pears from our own tree and wild blackberries from around the farm which we sold at Crediton Farmers’ Market along side the Free Range Eggs which we then produced from our flocks of free range hens. Now we produce a large and interesting range of preserves (jams, jellies, marmalades, curds and chutneys) that will tantalise even the most discerning palate.

All our preserves are made and cooked in the traditional way. Our high fruit jams and jellies are handmade in small batches without any need to add commercial pectins.  We only use whole fresh fruit and not commercial pulp and pre-prepared fruit bought in. The traditional chutneys are cooked slowly allowing the full flavours of the spices to infuse and develop whilst thickening, so we don’t need to add thickeners, flour or cornflour. The high content of the fruit and vegetables in all our preserves gives an excellent and full flavour to our jams, jellies, whole fruit marmalades and chutneys. In our award winning lemon curd we only use British unsalted butter, the juice from whole lemons, local free range eggs and sugar to preserve it, nothing else.

Our jams, jellies, marmalades, curds and chutneys are NUT & GLUTEN FREE with NO ADDED SALT, no artificial preservatives and no added colourings. They are suitable for vegetarians and with the exception of our curds they are also suitable for vegans.

We use local produce, where possible, some of which comes from our own farm, orchard, fruit and vegetable gardens. We source much of the fruit and vegetables we buy in from growers in Devon and Somerset.

Taste of the West Food Awards winners. Silver award for our Raspberry Jam  in the 2005  awards and the silver award for our Caramelized Onions in Red Wine, Lemon Curd and Strawberry & Gooseberry Jam in the 2009 awards.

We only produce quality preserves with texture and taste, made with care, on our Mid Devon farm.
